History:Green River Post Office was established as Green River City Post Office on August 26, 1868 in Carter County. John T. Reynolds was the first postmaster. Its name was changed to Green River Post Office on November 28, 1887. Its name was changed to Greenriver on December 1, 1895 and changed back to Green River on December 1, 1905. (Wyoming Post Offices) An important city on the Union Pacific Railroad, 320 miles west of Cheyenne and 180 miles east of Ogden, division point and terminus of the Oregon Short Line. Extensive shops located here. County seat of Sweetwater County. Electric light, a good water system, excellent schools and fine churches, large caustic soda works. Good hunting and fishing. Green River has the largest brewery in the state, and extensive steam sheep shearing plant and is the headquarters for the stockmen of Sweetwater County. (Wyoming State Business Directory, 1910-11)

Origin Of Name:Green River is the county seat of Sweetwater County, and is beautifully situated on Green River, which, running for miles through narrow canons, spreads out here into a wide valley. (WPA) Named for the river which in turn receives its name from the green shale through which it flows.
