Named for its location on the frontier. It was once a mining town; its first mine was opened in 1897. (WPA) This name was given as suggestive of its geographic location. (Annals of Wyoming 14:3) The Frontier formation consists of coal-bearing sandstone and shale of Benton (Upper Cretaceous) age. Its name is derived from Frontier, Wyo., where the coals are well developed.
